The Aokigahara Forest at the base of Mount Fuji is the most popular site for suicides in Japan. Its popularity has been attributed to the novel Kuroi Jukai (Tower of Waves), by Seicho Matsumoto, in which two young lovers commit suicide in the forest. Since its publication in 1960 people started taking their own lives there at a rate of 50 to 100 deaths a year.
